About
Wacomet Water Co. (Wacomet) is interested in developing and commercializing water desalination solutions. Desalination technologies available today suffer from many challenges, such as the cost and energy consumption of evaporative techniques or the concentrated brine waste disposal of reverse osmosis. Therefore, there is an ongoing effort in the research community to develop more energy-efficient processes. One potential solution is based on a patent application submitted by a joint effort between the Korea University Research and Business Foundation and the Research Triangle Institute: Desalting apparatus using solvent and the method thereof (WO2020075945A1, KR102064089B, US20210230020A1). It should be noted that this patent is not yet granted. The technology disclosed in the patent references a solvent extraction technique for desalination that uses an amine-based solvent with thermally responsive water solubility to extract pure water from a salt brine. Wacomet is interested in having Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) conduct an independent study of the viability of this technology for commercial scale-up in the form of a techno-economic analysis.
